Overview

Set out on an enthralling day trip to the historical treasure in the history trail in Murshidabad from Palm Aqua. The trip starts at 10 am in the morning with a scenic and peaceful drive through the rural areas of West Bengal, which are home to quaint villages and verdant fields. Check out the magnificent Hazarduari Palace, a thousand-door 19th-century masterpiece that is now a museum displaying items from the Nawabi dynasty. The Namak Haram Deorhi, Jafarganj Cemetery, the final resting ground of later Nawabs of Bengals who come from the Najafi dynasty, beginning Mir Jafar, his descendants and their family members and then visit House of Jagat Seth, the panoramic mansion of Jagat Seth, wealthy & influential merchant, banker & money lender during the time of the Nawabs. Proceed to the charming Nashipur Rajbari, where you can see how Indian and European architectural styles have been combined. Witness the majestic Katgola Palace, Tomb of Azimunissa Begum and the famous Khushbagh Cemetery. Then round it off with the light and sound show in Motijheel Park, 350 acre oxbow lake where large scale golden tinted pearl cultivation took place during the Nawabi period.

    10.00 am - Hazarduari

    At 9:00 start the drive from the hotel to reach at 10 : 00 Hazarduari, the palace with 1,000 doors, which was once the residence of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah. Take leisurely walks on the beautifully maintained grounds, or even just soak in the history laden air! The beautiful Palace of Hazarduari, with a thousand doors. The remaining 900 doors are not real and they were created with the sole purpose of tricking any possible trespassing. The palace's grand construction style, which artfully combines Greek and Italian architectural elements, is a magnificent illustration of Murshidabad's rich cultural legacy.

    11.00 am - Murshidabad Clock Tower

    The Murshidabad Clock Tower, designed by a Bengali assistant of Colonel McLeod, who was the architect of the Hazarduari Palace is situated in the Nizamat Fort Campus. Standing in the garden between the Nizamat Imambara and the Hazarduari Palace, this Ghari Ghar, consisting of a heavy bell, is pretty close to the old Madina Mosque as well as the Bacchawali Tope.

    11.15 am - The Bachhawali Tope

    The great cannon, consisting of two pieces of separate diameters, was made between the 12th &14th century, possibly by the Mohammedan rulers of Gaur, one of the most important capitals of classical and medieval India. Used to protect the city, this cannon is an astounding work of wrought iron artistry, something very rare in that era.

    11.30 am - The Namak Haram Deorhi

    Namak Haram Deorhi literally meaning the Traitor's Gate is also called Jafarganj Deorhi or Jufarganj Palace was the residence of the traitor Mir Jafar. Situated in the Lalbagh area, this red brick gate is right in front of Jafarganj Cemetery where Nawabs of Bengals of the Najafi dynasty like Mir Jafar rest.

    11.35 am - Jafarganj Cemetery

    This expansive cemetery, built by Mir Jafar, lies half a mile approximately to the north of the Nizamat Fort Campus. Jafraganj Cemetery sprawls over an area of 3.51 acres and is the final resting ground of later Nawabs of Bengals who come from the Najafi dynasty, beginning Mir Jafar, his descendants and their family members.

    11.45 am - House of Jagat Seth

    The panoramic mansion of Jagat Seth, wealthy & influential merchant, banker & money lender during the time of the Nawabs is still one of the most awe inspiring historical structures of the region. It is built by Hiranand Shah from Nagaur,Rajasthan, a Jain Oswal Bania. The mansion with secret tunnels, an underground chamber, is now a brilliant museum.

    12.15 pm - Nashipur Rajbari

    Nashipur Rajbari of the Nashipur Royal Family, was built by Raja Kirti Chandra Singha Bahadur in the year of 1865. The court of Debi Singha, tax collector of the British Raj, has been converted today into Nashipur Rajbari museum, showing off the personal belongings of the royal family, farmans, tax collection and legal documents of the colonial Raj.

    1.00 pm - Wasif Manzil

    Also called Wasef Manzil and New Palace, this palace, now a museum, was designed little like a castle, and was built by Nawab Wasif Ali Mirza Khan. This palace was where the Nawab actually resided, is known for its close proximity to the Hazarduari Palace runs parallel to the Bhāgirathi-Hooghly River. The palace with its semi-circular pediment as well as the Nawab's coat of arms, has a beautiful look.

    1.15 pm - Jahan Kosha Cannon

    Placed in the Topekhana, this gigantic cannon brought from Dhaka is a piece of artistry in ancient iron molding. Also referred to as the Great Gun, it literally means the "Destroyer of the World", and is made of ashtadhatu or 8 metals, standing as the testament to great craftsmanship.

    1.45 pm - Tomb of Azimunissa Begum

    Tomb of Azimunissa Begum, an ASI Listed Monument, according to the List of Monuments of National Importance in West Bengal, is the final resting place of Azimunissa Begum, who was the daughter of Murshid Quli Khan, the first Nawab of Bengal and the third Nawab of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, and the wife of the second Nawab Shuja-ud-Din Muhammad Khan.

    2.15 pm - Khosbag Garden

    Khushbagh or Khoshbagh, by the banks of the magnificent Ganges, literally meaning the "Garden of Happiness" is the garden-cemetery that is dedicated to the Nawabs of Bengal. The Nawabs of Bengal of the Afshar dynasty have made this garden their final abode along with their family members. The great Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah along with his wife and his mother rest here.

    3.30 pm - Motijheel Park

    Motijheel is arguably the cradle of British Raj rule in India is a vast, vividly green place where the flavor of Murshidabad's Nawabi History intermingles. This 350 acre oxbow lake was created out of a deserted bed of river Bhagirathi. The Motijheel, got its name from large scale golden tinted pearl cultivation that took place during the Nawabi period.
